Oh, I love this. It has been at the core of my perception of the sacred since I was a very little girl:
All art that really draws us to look at it deeply is spiritual. Art accepts all the sadness, and transforms it implicitly affirming that beauty is essentially the presence of God.
I know that to be true about you. I believe it as well. But it occurs to me that it is equally true that all thought that draws us to look at it deeply is spiritual. It is a premise from which I have long approached those who call themselves atheists. I often respond by noting that only someone who thinks deeply about spiritual matters would bother to call himself or herself atheist. But in a different and perhaps even more profound way the truth in this quote would well apply to a mathematician, or an expert on children's literature, or anyone whose thought draws us to deeper consideration of our lives and/or experiences.

ReplyDeleteThat's a really thought provoking observation. I like it.
Perhaps I should modify that and say, "Only someone who thinks about spiritual matters would bother to call himself or herself atheist." It is my opinion that most people don't think much at all but simply fall into line. Those who think at all sometimes choose to label themselves in a way that says, "I reject the views of the crowd," but, on further reflection I realize they haven't always thought it through on any truly deep level. ; )
ReplyDeleteStill I've found that suggesting they do think deeply about spiritual matters sometimes throws them off their guard enough to get them to listen to another view.
