Beauty

Artist: Anton von Werne

Two by Matthew Fox:
“Do not confuse beauty with beautiful. Beautiful is a human judgment. Beauty is All. The difference is everything.”

“If you look closely at a tree you'll notice it's knots and dead branches, just like our bodies. What we learn is that beauty and imperfection go together wonderfully.”

  1. I would have made the distinction between pretty and beautiful. I generally judge something or someone as beautiful because the beauty is set off by imperfection. But his point that beauty and imperfection go together is very true.

  2. My instinctive first reaction is in fact that trees and our bodies are not quite the same in that in this good old post-industrial-revolution western-lifestyle capitalist world we all live in, we tend to wreck our own bodies in a way that nothing in the wild does or can do, and the appearance of our bodies reflects that. What we do to trees can be equally ugly. But in the natural order of things this is not so and so I agree with your basic point, Ellie.

  3. I am reminded of the ageing process and how people aren't considered beautiful or to be a beauty beyond a certain age. The two become interlinked and are used to belittle the ageing.
