You know, I think this is often true:
In some awful, strange, paradoxical way, atheists tend to take religion more seriously than the practitioners.
It's true that militant atheists take religion more seriously than half-committed practitioners. I'm not sure it's true of committed practitioners tho, and I also know plenty of off-hand casual atheists who don't give it much thought but will say they don't believe in God if the subject comes up.However, I know what Jonathan Miller means.
