Like all good things, prayer requires some discipline. Yet I believe that life with God should seem more like friendship than duty. Prayer includes moments of ecstasy and also dullness, mindless distraction and acute concentration, flashes of joy and bouts of irritation. In other words, prayer has features in common with all relationships that matter.

Yes from me too. I am reading a book by Philip Yancey, Prayer, at the moment - is that the book this quote is from, Ellie?
ReplyDeleteHi, Cathy.
ReplyDeleteI found the quote somewhere online but it may well have come from the book, Prayer.
I've read a couple of his books along the way and they gave me good material for reflection.
I agree....I like Philip Yancey's books very much. Disappointment with God is a beautiful work focusing on the Book of Job. It's funny, we see the relationship between God and His Chosen People the same way that Yancey describes it. God and His People, God and me. So personal, a true love story.
