Mothering Sunday

"The Mother of God of Tenderness toward Evil Hearts"

To my American readers: In Europe, Mother's Day is observed on the traditional "Mothering Sunday" - the fourth Sunday in Lent or Laetare Sunday.

I've been saving the above painting for some time waiting for the right occasion to post it. I think today is a pretty good day!

  1. Love the blue and orange tones together. And the face is truly beatific. I have to say I find the hands look like they aren't quite connected properly to the body. For me the perspective is off. But it's still a great piece of art for Mothering Sunday

  2. Note to Ellie's American readers: "Mother's Day" is an abomination before the Lord and your stubborn persistence in celebrating it, and on completely the wrong day, is the cause of all the troubles in the world. Repent, and adopt the righteous practice of the one, true Church of England!

  3. I hadn't thought of the possibility that "Mother's Day" might be an abomination before the Lord. Wow! That's pretty scary stuff!

  4. I had the same thought about the hands, Tom. But since this is painted somewhat in the style of traditional icons, it's not surprising for the perspective to be off.

Oh, MadPriest, you are such a pure hoot. (That's an American expression by the way. Undoubtedly also an abomination!)

  5. "Hoot" is fine as it is an imaginative addition to our shared culture as opposed to being a REVISIONIST CORRUPTION of the faith once handed down to the English.

  6. Apologies to mad priest...surely we must repent of celebrating mothers on the WRONG day! How thoughtful of you to point this out.

  7. It has nothing to do with thoughtfulness. It is my duty as an Englishman to tell foreign people when they are wrong about something. There's no need to thank me - I enjoy my work.

  8. Trust me on this one, Annie. MadPriest is laughing at himself as much (if not more) than he is ribbing us. He's English, after all, and their humor is a bit odd. It comes from holding that upper lip so stiff, you see.

(And, oh, for my British readers: humor = humour.)

    :-)

  9. OMG! Annie didn't think I was being serious, did she? I thought she was playing along with me. Whoops!

My apologies. I come from a country where everything you say is taken as being ironic unless you clearly state otherwise by saying "I'm being serious here." Ellie, of course, speaks fluent English irony and I forget sometimes that other Americans do not.

  10. I'm not absolutely sure, MadPriest. Sometimes we Americans pick up on irony and sometimes we don't. (We tend to be more innocent, really, than you lot across the pond!) Annie may well have been being ironic herself and, yes, playing along with you. Of course, as you perfectly well know, I'm something of a mixed-up woman these days and can't even read my own compatriots all that accurately!

Anyway, I commented as I did just to be on the safe side....

  11. I got the joke! No need to explain.

  12. You see, Ellie. Annie was being as wicked as me all along.

  13. There's no need to be sarcastic, Ellie :-)

  14. MadPriest, I for one did my homework. Before responding I checked out your website. When I saw that your interests include funk and madness and that your favorite movies include Some like it Hot, Donnie Darko and Car Wash that’s all I needed to know to understand that you and I may on occasion suffer from similarly delightful quirks. It's probably a good thing I've never met you though. I've discovered that when I am around a person whose quirks appeal to me I can become helplessly possessed by both theirs and my own.

  15. Well, Tom. I had to look up "Donnie Darko" and "Car Wash". Of course, I already knew "Some Like It Hot"! :-)

Yeah, when they made MadPriest, they threw away the mold. 'Course, I could say that about you, too.....

  16. The common denominator here appears to be Ellie Finlay. Obviously she is a weirdo magnet.

  17. especially for weirdo's with sick, twisted senses of humOUr!
